Death of a Foundry,
Birth of a New Rapid Transportaion
Facility
Under steel-clouded skies at 1:00
PM, Saturday, April 20, 2002, the last remaining major structure,
a tower, at the former General Ironworks site, a generations-old
foundry located in Englewood, CO became an obscure footnote in
local history. For decades, a familiar sight to travelers on South
Santa Fe Drive and RTD Light Rail commuters, its tower was dragged
down in a thunderous crash, and a cloud of dust. The the project
was contracted to Fiore and Sons Demoltion Contractors to make
way for a new $28.4 million Regional Transportation District Light
Rail Maintenance Facility scheduled for completion in the fall
of 2004. The new T-REX project is contracted to the M. A. Mortenson
company, family owned buisiness founded in 1954. The T-Rex line
will be operrational in 2006.
